2nd CyberMedia Dice-TNS survey of job seeking IT Professionals reveals:

  • 29% highly satisfied with their current job
  • Shopping for the 'best deal in town'
Gurgaon salary comparable to Bangalore salary

Ever spent a few minutes in an IT company in the electronics city in Bangalore ,
the Hi-tech city in Hyderabad or the Cybergreens in Gurgaon on the outskirts of Delhi?
The first few minutes of eye gazing are enough to convince you that the ever youthful IT professional is in her 20s. If you are good at face reading, you may even be able to make out that two out of three IT professionals walking in and out of the hallowed portals of the sun-rise industry were promoted less than a year ago.

The findings of the 2nd online survey of 1886 respondents from amongst 350,000 members enrolled on CyberMedia Dice, a dedicated technology job site, are an eye opener even to the 1.1 million IT professionals in India . The highlights are:

  • Nearly 63% of the IT professionals have less than 5 years of work experience in IT or IT related field
  • More than 75% of the professionals have been with their current employer for less than 2 years, indicating that the IT industry has one of the most mobile work force
  • More than 70% of the IT professionals have been promoted in the last one year.
  • The job seeking IT professionals are a highly satisfied and committed lot with a quarter of them having a TRI*M Index above 70 while the all India mean for all employees (across all sectors) is only 62. The TRI*M Index is a measure of strength of the 'employee-employer relationship'
  • 60% of the respondents have posted resumes on job portals, even though they are happy and committed showing that they are shopping around for the best deal in town for someone with their skills sets and experience
  • Growth offered by a company is found to be the most important determinant of employee motivation and commitment, according to the survey, while the salary does not have much of an impact on motivation or commitment.

The survey was carried by the Indian arm of the world's largest custom research agency, TNS. The agency deployed its globally accepted proprietary TRI*M model (pronounced Tri M) for measuring, managing and monitoring stakeholder relationships. This system has been used by TNS worldwide to understand what drives relationships across stakeholder groups including employees, channel partners and customers.

Motivation and Commitment
Commenting on the highlights of the survey, Mr. Abraham Karimpanal, Head of Technology Practice of TNS India said, " Nearly a fourth of the job seeking IT professionals are an extremely happy and a committed lot with TRI*M index of 70 plus, significantly higher than the Indian industry average of 62."

While the employees rate the quality of work place as average, on other key relationship drivers such as overall work culture and organizational climate, job content, a fair and transparent performance management and work life balance, the current employers are rated below average.

Talking about the GenNext IT professionals, Mr. Pradeep Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director of CyberMedia said, "A closer look at the profile indicates that that they are restless, very ambitious professionals looking for a fast track career growth. The challenge for the industry is to meet their ambitions and aspirations."

The study reveals that the employees demonstrate the highest commitment to their organization in their first year of employment and it drops considerably over the years.

IT professionals promoted in the last six months in their company have the highest satisfaction level while those waiting for their promotion for over two years are the least committed to their jobs. The survey found that professionals at junior to middle level with a gross salary of Rs. 5 lakh are more committed than those at the middle or senior level with a salary of Rs. 12 lakh.

Multinational companies (Indian or non-Indian) are able to command higher level of commitment compared to those respondents working with Indian and joint venture companies.

Mr. Abraham Mathew, CEO, CyberMedia Dice said, "That the specialist job portals are becoming an important tool for hiring by the IT industry is visible in the jump in the number of IT professionals registered with three or more job portals from 17% in 2005 to almost 60% in 2006."

Those who believe that IT professionals have enough time on hand for fun and pubbing are in for a surprise as 3 out 5 IT professionals spent between 8-10 hours of work every day. One out of six IT professionals put in over 10 hours of work and only one out of four IT professionals were lucky to put in under 8 hours of work.

"The CyberMedia Dice-TNS survey reveals that the postgraduates in technical subjects are getting paid 17 per cent more than MBAs employed in IT industry," Mr. Mathew added.

Region-wise Salary Breakdown
The survey finds that salaries in western and southern India are higher than the North and East. Salaries in Gurgaon, in the north, are now comparable with those offered in the IT capital Bangalore .

West has the highest average annual salary of Rs. 4.91 lakh followed by South at Rs. 4.79 lakh. The last two spots go to professionals from North and East at Rs. 4.58 lakh and Rs. 4.14 lakh per annum respectively.

The average annual salary of job seeking IT professionals in Bangalore and Gurgaon, just above Rs. 6 lakh mark is the highest in the country. The average cost-to-company of IT professionals working in Chennai and Hyderabad was Rs. 4.5 lakh per annum in 2006.

As per the survey, carried out in the last quarter of 2006, the average annual salary for an IT professional in Mumbai is Rs. 5.09 lakh with those in Pune drawing only marginally less. The respondents from Delhi have an average annual salary of Rs. 4.89 lakh.

Interestingly, the survey brings to light that the larger the size of the organization, higher the salary offered to its employees. The salary drawn by those employed in companies with over 5,000 employees is double the salary drawn by those working in companies with less than 50 employees.

The survey reveals that for 90 per cent of the respondents their ideal employer would be a multinational software firm, be it an Indian or a non Indian MNC.

Profile of the respondents
Of the 1886 respondents from across the length and breadth of the country, two-thirds are between 23-31 years. Respondents turned out to be evenly distributed between Indian MNC, non-Indian MNC and Indian companies.

Around 60 per cent of the respondents had non-technical educational background.  One fifth of the respondents were engineers.

Almost half of the respondents had worked with their current employer for less than a year. However, IT professionals in Delhi and Kolkata beat the trend. Nearly 29% respondents in these two cities had been with their current employer for more than three years. On an average each respondent IT professional had changed three jobs.

The survey drew respondents from over 50 cities, with Bangalore contributing the largest number of 453 respondents, followed by Hyderabad 252, Chennai 213, Mumbai 181 and Delhi 166.
