Growth revives in the commercial segment
According to Anirban Banerjee, Associate Vice President, Research, IDC India, “Continued consumer confidence and a revival of growth in key sectors of the economy, led to the January-March 2010 quarter experiencing an upward trend in consumer PC shipments. The commercial segment, especially large and very large businesses, too saw a demand growth. This performance underscores a more broad based recovery in the India PC market.”
The market registered a 42% year-on-year (1Q 2010 over 1Q 2009) growth* in the consumer PC segment and a 28% year-on-year (1Q 2010 over 1Q 2009) growth* in commercial PC shipments as a result of improved performance across all segments.
"The high traction in desktop PC shipments during 1Q 2010 can be attributed to the long-overdue spends on IT infrastructure by large and very large businesses and the Government segment. Growth in notebook PC shipments was mainly driven by consumer demand”, stated Sumanta Mukherjee, Lead PC Analyst, IDC India.
“The mini notebook PC segment continued to show healthy growth in shipments, as more consumers sought affordable mobile computing. Intense competition forced a drop in prices, encouraging greater adoption”, Sumanta further added.
Note for Editors: The India PC market size, growth rates and vendor shares reported here are in terms of “unit shipments”, referred to as ‘sales’ in the press release. As per IDC taxonomy, unit shipments constitute a measure of the number of PCs shipped by a vendor to all distribution channels or directly to end users. Units are counted as they leave the vendor and are not double counted in the case of OEM relationships in which systems are shipped twice.
